What / who are the Illuminati (simplified please)?

I heard my friends talking about some sort of 'illuminati conspiracy' and felt annoyed as I don't actually know who or what they are. I am a very skeptical about these conspiracy theories. So who are they? Can you explain in a simple way? Wikipedia's too complicated :/
